One Irmo, South Carolina UPS driver has a very special stop on his usual day of deliveries. Dwight Praylow, a UPS driver for over 15 years, happened to meet an 84-year-old woman named Nancy McCummings after delivering a package to her house. Nancy’s son had died back in 2013, and after his death, the house began to go downhill when he was no longer there to fix things up.
When Dwight noticed the conditions in Nancy’s house, he realized he could step in and help her live more comfortably. After a large flood hit the house in October, the permanent damage left the house exposed, leading to a cockroach infestation. Upon seeing this, Dwight knew he had to do something. Contacting his coworkers, friends, and twin brother, Dwight set up a team to entirely revamp the broken down home.
“To me it goes back to that saying, it takes a village to raise a child. So when that child gets elderly, who is going to take care of them. So to me its a reach back kind of thing,” Dwight said.
Clearing out anything that was too damaged to salvage, the team got together and cleaned the walls before priming and repainting them entirely. Replacing the flooring for heavily damaged parts of the house, this team led by Dwight accomplished a massive amount of work in a short time. Keeping Nancy in a hotel while they finished up the work, the reveal for the new house was truly breathtaking for her.
“I told them this isn’t my house. I’ve never lived here before, and they laughed because it is phenomenal what they did,” Nancy said after seeing the amazing improvements the team made.
Contributing money and getting some donations, the team was able to replace Nancy’s furniture and get her a new refrigerator. Nancy could not believe strangers would put so much time, money, and effort to help her when she really needed it.
“They worked all day Easter here, so I really appreciate it to have these young guys with that kind of heart they showed. And I adopted them now as my boys,” Nancy said.
Despite the incredible job Dwight and his team did for, he does not feel that the job is completely done still. A lot of the next fixes in the house require a lot of special skills, and installing new cabinets and sinks would not be cheap. Dwight is still motivated to keep working till he can make Nancy’s house perfect, but for now, the team fixed more than Nancy could have ever imagined.
